WHAT TO VISIT
Toural Square
Considered today to be the heart of the city, in the 17th century it was a square outside the city walls next to the main gate of the town, where several fairs were held.
S. Pedro Basilica
A beautiful neoclassical church located in Largo do Toural, it was the first church in the Archdiocese of Braga to receive the title of basilica, thanks to the indult granted by the Brief of Benedict XIV.
Padrão do Salado
Located in front of the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church, the Padrão do Salado has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church
The church is located in the historic center of Guimarães. It is Gothic in style and dates back to the 14th century. It has been classified as a national monument since 1910.
Largo da Oliveira
Largo da Oliveira owes its name to an ancient olive tree planted in this location. Surrounded by picturesque, typically northern houses, it is the ideal starting point for walking through the city streets.
D. Afonso Henriques Statue
Located next to the main entrance to the Sacred Hill is the sculpture of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. The sculpture is by Soares dos Reis.
Paços dos Duques de Bragança
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, its structure includes a wing intended for the official residence of the Presidency of the Republic.
S. Miguel do Castelo Church
In Romanesque style and architectural simplicity. The symbolism of the Church is linked to the foundation of the nationality and to the tradition that says that King D. Afonso Henriques was baptized there.
Guimarães Castle
Recognized by many as the castle that is most closely linked to the origins of Portugal. It was founded by the county in the second half of the 10th century and was classified as a National Monument in 1881.
Largo da República do Brasil
The square is known by locals as “Campo da Feira”. The beautiful garden that stretches all the way to the church changes color throughout the seasons, always with seasonal flowers.
S. Gualter Church
The S. Gualter Church , also known as the Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos Church, where the city's festivals are held, commonly known as the Gualterianas Festivals.
Penha´s Mountain and Sanctuary
Located 5km from the city centre and 10 minutes by cable car, Penha Mountain rises to an altitude of 617m with 60ha of green area, combining religiosity and nature.

Nicolinas
These are the festivals of the students of Guimarães, celebrated in honor of Saint Nicholas of Mira. They usually begin on November 29th and end on December 7th.

Afonsina Fair
The Fair, held in June, is a historical recreation event that takes place in the period before the founding of Portuguese nationality.
